eMarketing recommended blogs, web style & more
Posted by Doug Lacombe
For those of you in my CMA eMarketing course at Mount Royal University, here are a few of the promised items to aid you in your studies and the assignment.
For non-students, these are just good marketing links and probably worth a gander anyway.
First, a brilliant classic on web design, the Web Style Guide, 3rd Edition. Originally produced out of Yale’s Center for Advanced Instructional Media, this excellent text on web design and human computer interaction covers the gamut, from typography to navigation, structure to multimedia.
Second, a few good digital/social/e-marketing blogs to subscribe to now that you have RSS flowing through Google Reader:
- Web Strategy by Jeremiah Owyang
- community and social media by Chris Brogan
- Mashable.com – the social media guide
- Web Analytics Blog – Occam’s Razor by Avinash Kaushik
- Canadian Marketing Blog – CMA
- The ClientSide Blog by Michael Seaton (author of CMA eMarketing course materials)
- Web Ink Now by David Meerman Scott
- Six Pixels of Separation by Mitch Joel (author of the book you received in my class if you’re a student)
- Consult Coniferous by John Hutchings (Rare Method strategist and guest lecturer in our class)
- Anduro Marketing Blog by Jeff Nelson and his team at Anduro (Jeff will be a guest lecturer in an upcoming class)
That should be enough to get you started – of course there are zillions more, but the above blogs are ones I derive value from regularly.
Finally, to help you get started on Twitter, here are a few interesting communications folks you can follow, several are the bloggers noted above. See who they follow on Twitter to extend your network:

Hi Doug,
You mentioned in class that you also had some resources for putting together a social media policy for companies.
Could you post that as well?
Thanks for all the info.

Yes, Jessie, that’s right, thanks for reminding me!
The most excellent Dave Fleet of Thornley-Fallis Communications has a great blog, is a good one to follow on Twitter, but, notably, has posted this guidebook for companies creating social media policy.
Also, the site Social Media Governance has a treasure trove of sample policies.
And Mashable.com has a good post from Associate Editor Jennifer Van Grove on “3 Great social Media Policies to Steal From”, as well as numerous other posts on Social Media Policy.
